The brief

Basalt Clay Works throw everything by hand in a garage studio in Hood River, and no two cups match. Their wholesale buyers needed a catalogue where each piece looked like itself, with the speckle in the glaze clear enough to compare one batch with the next.

The light

We built a dark grey wall behind a white table, so the pale clay had something to stand against. One large softbox came in low from the side like a north window, with a white card opposite to lift the shadows only a little. The Hasselblad files let us keep every speck of iron in the glaze without sharpening anything.

The result

Thirty-two catalogue stills in one consistent light, plus six group shots for the wholesale sheet. Buyers now reorder by quoting the photo number, which saves everyone a phone call.
