The brief

Hollis Porcelain slip-cast small vases in unglazed white. White on white is the hardest brief in product photography: if the light is too soft the shapes flatten, and if it is too hard the shadows look dirty.

The light

We used one large diffused source from the front left, then flagged it so the background fell half a stop darker than the vases. That small difference is what lets a white form separate from a white wall. A single shadow to the right gives each vase its outline.

The result

Twenty single stills, four group shots for the collection page, and a one-page lighting diagram they now hand to anyone who shoots for them.
