The brief
Northfold make a card wallet milled from one piece of aluminium. Their old photos were bright and even, and the wallet looked like a phone case. They asked for pictures that make you want to run a thumb along the edge.
The light
Brushed metal only shows its grain when light skims across it, so the head sat almost level with the table, a metre to the left. Everything else went dark: black velvet underneath and black flags on both sides. We moved the wallet a few millimetres at a time until the brushing lines ran the full length of the face.
The result
Nine stills on near black, including the one now printed on the box. The darker set also made the engraved lettering readable for the first time, with no retouching on the type.
