The sun, a window blind and a hand mirror

The brief

Stillwater Bitters wanted pictures for a printed recipe booklet that felt like a kitchen at seven in the morning, not a studio. Their bottles are plain glass with a small paper tag, so the light had to do the talking.

The light

We rented a room with east windows and started at sunrise. The blinds turned the sun into stripes that we could move across the table by tilting the slats, and a hand mirror bounced a spot of light back into the dark side of each bottle. We had about ninety minutes before the sun climbed too high.

The result

Eighteen stills across two mornings, printed in the booklet on uncoated paper and reused on the website. Not one frame has a light stand in it.
